According to a report from state-run research institutes in Beijing, Chinese organizations have launched a total of 79 large-language models (LLMs) over the past three years, as part of their intensified efforts in artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm development. The report, authored by research institutes under the Ministry of Science and Technology, highlights that the development of LLMs using deep learning techniques and vast amounts of text data entered an “accelerated” phase in 2020. The report reveals that in 2020, China released 2 LLMs compared to 11 in the United States, but in 2021, both countries released 30 LLMs each. In the following year, US organizations released 37 LLMs while China released 28. As of this year, China has taken the lead with 19 LLMs compared to 18 from the US. The report emphasizes that China and the US dominate the global landscape, accounting for over 80 percent of the total number of large-language models. However, the Chinese AI industry faces challenges due to US-led export controls restricting access to critical components like semiconductors for training LLMs. The report also highlights the need for increased collaboration between academia and industry in joint development projects. It concludes by mentioning that Chinese tech giants, including Alibaba, Sensetime, and Baidu, have launched their own chatbot versions powered by generative AI and LLMs following the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
