Myanmar Hit by Deadly Tornado: 8 Dead and Dozens Injured in Devastating Storm

On Friday evening, a tornado hit two villages in central Myanmar, causing widespread damage to the area. The villages affected were Aung Myin Kone and Tadau, located near the capital Naypyitaw. According to officials, the tornado left eight people dead and over 100 injured. 128 individuals have been taken to hospitals by non-profit organizations, as 232 houses were demolished in the two affected villages. Two Buddhist monasteries and a small clinic were also among the structures that suffered damage. Social media platforms display numerous images and recordings that exhibit powerful wind gusts moving through the village with tremendous force.

The tornado reportedly blew for approximately 40 minutes, damaging almost all houses in the villages. The restoration process is expected to take months. Thet Paing Soe, a leading member of the Doh Lewe charity organization, stated that the fatalities and damages were quite rare in central Myanmar. Kyaw Moe Oo, a director-general at the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology, explained that major tornadoes are rare in Myanmar, and smaller tornadoes that occur in the pre-monsoon period rarely cause fatalities or significant damage.

Myanmar undergoes severe weather conditions almost every year during the monsoon season. In 2008, cyclone Nargis killed more than 138,000 people. While this tornado was not as severe, it still caused significant damage and loss of life.
